Election Results in Precincts 325 and 342 |
Results from the November 7th Presidential Election are now available for each precinct. Two precincts overlay the BHNA area for a combined area that is larger than the neighborhood association boundaries. Precinct 325, south of Barton Skyway, recorded a turnout of almost 59% of 2,989 registered voters. North of Barton Skyway, Precinct 342 did slightly better with almost 62% of its 2,877 registered voters going to the poll. These results compare favorably to the overall voter turnout of 53% in Travis County. In the 1996 Presidential election, the turnout in each precinct was slightly higher with 59.6% in Pct. 325, and 62.7% in Pct. 342.
Many neighborhood residents took advantage of early voting before election day. In Pct. 325, there were 805 voters who cast their ballots early out of the total 1,762 voters. In Pct. 342, a total of 1,779 people voted, and 726 voted early. Sixteen percent in Pct. 325 and more than 15% in Pct. 342 voted Straight Party for the Democrats, while the Republicans received almost 11% and more than 8% Straight Party votes, respectively, in each precinct. In the Presidential/V.P. race, nearly 47% in Pct. 325 and 48% in Pct. 342 went for Gore/Lieberman. The Bush/Cheney ticket received about 35% and 31%, respectively in Pcts. 325 and 342. The Libertarians (Browne/Olivier) and the Independents (Buchanan/Foster) captured 1% or less of the total vote in each precinct for this race, but the Green Partys Nader/LaDuke ticket received almost 17% of the total vote in Pct. 325 and over 19% in Pct. 342. The Nader ticket received only 10% of the vote countywide. Both precincts voted for the Democrat and BHNA member, Ann Kitchen for the 48th District State Representative seat with 65% and 66% of the total vote. Republican Jill Warren received just over 25% of the total vote in each precinct. Kitchen also won countywide with 56% compared to Warrens 35% of the total vote. In the County Constable Pct. 3 race, Republican Drew McAngus defeated Democrat Kevin Miskell by about 6% of the county vote. In Pcts. 325 and 342, however, Miskell received strong majority support. In Capital Metros Light Rail referendum, the vote was almost identical in both precincts, with 53% and 55% supporting the proposal, and 41% voting against in both precincts. Six percent of the voters in Pct. 325 and 3% in Pct. 342 ignored this contest, choosing not to vote either for or against Light Rail. Both precincts also voted very similarly in the City of Austin special bond election. A majority of about 75% in each precinct approved Proposition 1 for $150 million in general obligation bonds for infrastructure for roads, highways, and bicycle and pedestrian mobility. Proposition 2 also received strong support, with 69% in Pct. 325 and 73% in Pct 342, for $13.4 million in GO bonds for land acquisitions to preserve open spaces. Both precincts also defeated Proposition 3 with slim margins. Proposition 3 would have authorized 400 acres near Lake Walter E. Long to be leased for a hotel, golf course, conference center and related facilities. These precinct tallies mirrored the countywide vote on the three propositions. Detailed results for every race, including congressional, state, judicial, school board and county contests are available at the Travis County Elections Division and also online at: http://www.co.travis.tx.us/county_clerk/election. |
