General Meeting Minutes
October 27, 1998
Treasurer's Report
President, Peter Hess, called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. Pat Whiteside, VP of Membership, reported there were 288 household members currently. Ferne Mizzel, Treasurer, reported that available funds were $2736. She also said that the 4th of July parade approximately broke even with revenues from ads and donations nearly matching the $716.34 of expenses.
Election of Officers
Rick Albers, Chair of the Nominating Committee, read the slate of candidates for next year's officers: Peter Hess, President; Pat Whiteside, VP of Membership; Yates Barreda, Recording Secretary; Janice and Will Godwin, Corresponding Secretary; John Bell, Treasurer; and Betty Brown, Delegate to the Austin Neighborhood Council. Peter asked for other nominations. There were none. The slate of candidates was voted on and approved. The minutes of the last general meetings were presented and approved.
Old Business
Tree-planting on Barton Parkway
Kevin Blackburn presented the plan and asked for volunteers to come out and assist with planting on Saturday, November 14th
Sunken Gardens
Peter Hess reported that Robert Hanson said that Sunken Gardens near Barton Springs will be restored and asked for volunteers to help with planning. Larry Akers, Roberta Preston, George Lewis, and James Nagy offered to help.
Barton Hills School Tree Replacement
Peter Hess reported that more trees on the school playground have died. Also that the trail has eroded. Peter has not heard from AISD regarding their plans to replace the tress. Joe Winkler said he would check with the principal at the school and follow up on it.
PA system
The system that Peter was trying out was not satisfactory. The motion to purchase the system was tabled. Carl Newsome will check with the church to see if there is a system in the meeting room that can be used.
Web Page
Peter thanked Glenn Chase for his work on the Barton Hills Neighborhood Association web page and asked for a committee to help make decisions about what should be on the web page. Glenn Chase, Jo Clifton, and Sandy Nichols offered to serve on the committee.
New Business
Terrace PUD
Peter discussed the plans for developing the Terrace PUD and Computer Sciences Corporation's (CSC) plans to have 3,500 employees work there. Darryl Slusher said the City Council had presented alternatives sites to CSC that they were investigating. Darryl suggested that individuals and/or the association write letters to CSC and the developers outlining our neighborhoods' views on the development. Sandy Nichols made a motion for a resolution by the association asking that CDC look at alternative sites and that the PUD plan not be changed, and that Peter Hess write letters on behalf of the neighborhood association listing our concerns to CSC, W&G, the developers, and the City Planning Department. The motion was passed unanimously (88 people were in attendance at the meeting). Sandy Nichols made a motion that a committee be established to follow the issue. The motion was seconded and passed unanimously. Kay Killen, Joe Clifton, Bob Dougherty, and Rita Gonzalez volunteered to serve on the committee.
Closure of the South 5th Street Post Office
Betty Brown moved that the neighborhood association pass a resolution asking to the Post Office to keep a retail outlet in the neighborhood. The motion was seconded and passed unanimously. She also suggested that people write their U.S. representatives about keeping a retail outlet nearby.
Beautification Issue
Mr. McWhorter read the ordinance regarding recreational vehicles and boats. Peter asked for a committee to assist him. Betty Brown volunteered.
Candidate Forum
Todd Baxter was unable to attend. Nan Clayton, the other candidate for County Commissioner Precinct 3 gave a short presentation and answered questions.
Bond Election
Larry Akers discussed Propositions 11 and 12 regarding Auditorium Shores and Palmer Auditorium. Darryl Slusher discussed Propositions 1 through 10 and answered questions.
 
The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 p.m.
