General Meeting Minutes
April 16, 2002
Call to Order
President Robin McKeever called the meeting to order at 7:00. Approximately 50 members present approved minutes from the general meeting of January 29, 2002, which had been posted on the web and distributed in hardcopy.
Treasurer's Report
Rafael Quintanilla, Treasurer, delivered the Treasurer's report, announcing that we now have a balance of $5,066.50 unencumbered.
Announcements Robin distributed correspondence (attached) authorized by the Executive Committee:
  • To the City Council pressing them not to sell the Brodie Tract.
  • To the Terrace Development pressing them to reduce lighting.
  • From the Terrace Development agreeing to evaluate and try to reduce lighting.

Robin distributed information on the upcoming elections, and Rafael reminded neighbors of coming candidate forums.

Robin recognized the following attendees:

  • Neighbor Glenn Chase for his excellent work developing and maintaining our new web site.
  • Neighbor Pat Whiteside, who is an incumbent candidate for the AISD school board.
  • Neighbor Craig Smith, who is an incumbent candidate for the Edwards Aquifer Conservation District Board.
  • Brad Ellers, a Capital Metro representative to our neighborhood.

Robin provided an update on the Barton Springs Road project: work stopped three weeks ago has now resumed and is still projected to finish by the end of this year.

Request For Volunteers Robin asked for volunteers:
  • For National Night Out Coordinator
  • For Greenbelt Cleanup Coordinator - Glee Ingram volunteered
  • For 4th of July Parade Committee Chair, taking over for Noel Holmes, who will leave Austin in May.
  • For Corresponding Secretary, taking over newsletter responsibilities for Noel.

Interested neighbors should contact Robin.

APD Representative Robin introduced Mike Summers, our new Austin Police Department representative, who spoke of his commitment to attend our meetings and acknowledged interest in crime prevention in the neighborhood and the greenbelt. Scott Johnson asked how to reserve a speed trailer, and Mike directed him to make arrangements through our APD liaison, Art Stone. Mike also invited neighbors to an APD-sponsored Senior Information Fair scheduled at the South Austin Activity Center on May 17th.
Brodie Tract Update

Donna Tiemann from the Barton View Neighborhood Association updated us on the proposed sale by the city of the Brodie Tract: BHNA (as authorized by the Executive Committee) and other groups petitioned the City Council not to sell, and the proposed sale was scuttled. Further discussions conducted by the city on this topic are expected. Donna circulated a petition to designate the Tract as a preserve.

SOS Presentation Bill Bunch and Colin Clark of SOS briefed members on developer activities currently threatening Barton Creek and Barton Springs, including proposed development of Mopac south to 45-S, and on SOS activities to keep transportation development east of I-35. Bunch urged neighbors to thank the City Council for taking development of 45-S out of the city transportation plan, and to urge Council members to oppose state funding. He also noted that SOS has also been pressuring the City Council to preserve the Brodie Tract.
Other Business Glee Ingram again requested that our next general meeting agenda include discussion of ways to eliminate traffic humps that affect traffic in and out of our neighborhood and to prevent installation of any new ones.
Adjourn
The meeting adjourned at 8:25 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
Sharon Slagle
Recording Secretary
