Introduction
Members present were Joe Gieselman, Mark Reinking, John Bell, Emily Mazac, Kay Killen, and Yates Barreda.

Meeting Notes
Joe Gieselman has selected five people to serve on the committee to nominate officers for the coming year: Lisa Fehrencamp, chair; Ferne Mizell; Pat Whiteside; Stephanie Benold; and Nan Clayton.
Joe has encountered more difficulty recruiting people to serve serve on the committee to work with the Zilker Neighborhood committee on traffic calming along Robert E. Lee. Bob Liverman has agreed to participate, and there are leads on two others. John Bell volunteered to help. Carl Newsome just left for Italy for a month. Joe would like the group to meet with Dave Gerard, the Austin City contact, before the next Zilker Neighborhood meeting. On the issue of installing sidewalks along Robert E. Lee and Barton Hills Drive adjacent to Zilker Park, Joe learned from Stuart Strong of the Parks Department, that the City Public Works Department has plans to install a 6 concrete walk a John Bell will give Gloria Hill a list of members for the BHNA Listserve. AGENDA FOR THE OCTOBER 24 MEETING Joe proposed having two speakers, one pro and one con, on the light rail issue for the October general meeting. They will each be allowed 8-10 minutes to talk with time at the end for questions. There was discussion about whether to have the speakers at the beginning or the end of the meeting. The election of new officers will be held. John Bell will give the third-quarter Treasurers report. He will announce that additional funds for the Sunken Gardens project have been given (nearly $2500 so far) and that the BHNA Listserve has been created and plans to move that BHNA match private funds given to Officer Jones family. The Transportation Committee will report on the progress of traffic calming talks with the Zilker Neighborhood and the City and on the status of the sidewalk in Zilker Park. Kelly Shannon will report on the work of the Sunken Gardens committee and the status of the Terrace Project, which has just filed a revised site plan with the City. Kay Killen will report on ANC activities. THE NEWSLETTER Articles for the newsletter are due l October; it will be published the 14th. There will be a lick-n-stick meeting 16 October at Johns house to prepare the newsletters for mailing. Joe will do articles on the sidewalk and traffic calming. He will also write a status report on neighborhood accomplishments during his term and whats left to be done. Kelly Shannon will do items on the Terrace Project and Sunken Gardens. There will be an announcement about the Mobil Station at the corner of Lamar and Barton Skyway leaving. (It was approved that Joe send the station a letter urging it stay in the neighborhood as a full-service station.) Emily Mazac will write a summary of the 4th of July parade activities, list the winners of the competitions, and thank the Committee and all the sponsors, including the Barton Hills Market where everyone assembled. The newsletter will include the usual membership form and announce that dues are due for the coming year. The committee discussed ways to encourage participation at meetings. One possibility might be a session at the end of each meeting where members could address issues that concern them that may not have been on the agenda. It was suggested that each speaker be allotted 3 minutes with a maximum of 4 speakers per meeting. There was general consensus that we would like to see more community involvement and that the neighborhood needs a winter community-building event like the 4th of July activities. A Halloween party? a holiday party? It was decided not to try to do anything this season because of time constraints and to leave it to the incoming officers. ANC REPORT Kay Killen reported that a group from the ANC had gone to Dallas to see its transportation system. The main issues at the last meeting were light rail and increasing funding for libraries to bring them into the 21st century. She stressed the increasing importance of a neighborhood plan as a precondition for receiving City services. |
