Barton Hills Neighborhood Association
Executive Committee Meeting Minutes
March 19, 2002
Attendees
Officers present were Robin McKeever, Peter Hess, Mark Gentle, Rafael Quintanilla, and Sharon Slagle. Glenn Chase, BHNA web coordinator, also attended.
Web Site Upgrade
Explaining that our current web site host requires us to use inefficient publishing tools and to rework our site because of imminent changes in publishing processes, Glenn Chase proposed that we move our BHNA web site to www.main.org, which provides free service and hosts many other neighborhood associations. The Executive Committee approved his proposal.

He also requested and received approval to register for the association the domain name www.bhna.net. He then demonstrated the redesigned prototype BHNA web site, which the Executive Committee enthusiastically approved. He will maintain a "portal" page on www.austin360.com to redirect visitors to the new main.org site.
Brodie Tract Issue Donna Tiemann, who chairs Barton View Neighborhood Association, presented a draft resolution to limit development on the Brodie tract, requesting BHNA support. The Executive Committee elected to adjust the resolution slightly (see attached), and Robin will prepare and sign it by March 21st.
Updates

4th of July Parade Planning: Noel will be leaving Austin in May and has offered to do the following before she leaves: prepare an action plan, arrange the advertising, and provide a media list and sponsor contact. Robin will handle the Old Navy contract. Robin solicited suggestions for the roles of Grand Marshal and Master of Ceremonies.

Corresponding Secretarial Duties: Robin will post a listserv email asking for volunteers interested in working on the newsletter after Noel leaves.

Postponement of General Meeting: St. Mark's meeting rooms will be engaged on April 9th, the previously scheduled date for our next General Meeting, so the Executive Committee rescheduled the General Meeting for April 16th. Robin will arrange for corrected signs.

Terrace Committee: Mark circulated aerial photos and a site plan obtained from the Terrace. He recommended that BHNA issue a letter asking the Terrace to commit to reduce the lighting. The letter will indicate that the association is prepared to bring pressure to bear for a city lighting ordinance if necessary. The Executive Committee endorsed this approach.

Planning for a Candidate Forum: Robin has asked two neighbors to agree to organize a candidate forum for late April.

Update on Support for School Landscaping Plan: The Executive Committee needs more information in order to put together a proposal for the membership that includes specific funding recommendations for specific landscaping components. Robin will follow up with Carl Newsome to put together a proposal for a subsequent General Meeting.

Membership survey results Top issues included the following:
  • Crime prevention - The Executive Committee will continue to encourage a close relationship with the police department and to maintain ties with the new officer assigned to this area. We will publish crime statistics in the newsletter and facilitate sharing information about crime in the neighborhood via the listserv and Art Stone's distribution list.
  • Development in or near the neighborhood - The Terrace subcommittee is focussed on reducing light and noise pollution from the Terrace development, and the Executive Committee will monitor and provide regular information on other development concerns, such as the Brodie Tract issue.
  • Sidewalks - Joe Gieselman has been successful getting sidewalks for the neighborhood, and the Executive Committee will try to enlist his support to maintain the momentum he started.
Agenda for Next General Meeting Officers agreed on the following agenda items for the April 16th meeting:
  • SOS presentation on the aquifer
  • Terrace update
  • Brodie tract issue update
  • 4th of July Parade planning update
  • Review of top issues identified in the membership survey and plans to address them
  • Announcement of new BHNA web site
  • Introduction of new neighborhood police officer
Newsletter Articles Robin will circulate a list of suggestions by email.
Closing
The meeting adjourned at 9:20 pm

Respectfully submitted,
Sharon Slagle
